President Papadakis announced the establishment of the Hun H. Sun Professorship in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering in November 1997. Dr. Banu Onaral, Director of the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering was appointed the first Hun H. Sun Professor.
The first annual Dietrich W. Bostiber Engineering Entrepreneurial Design Competition was held. The top three winners of the competition selected by the Engineering Entrepreneurial Committee were ECE teams.
- 1st prize went to "Angel: Palm Pilot Software," team member: Tyler Frieling 99.
- 2nd prize went to "CD Runner," team members: Todd Lewis 98, James Koenig 98, and John Gianvittorio 98; advisor: Prof. Albert Tonik.
- 3rd Prize went to "Brain Oxygenation Monitor," team members William J. Barger 98, Aaron R. Castillo 98, Eduardo Gudis 98, and Lisa D. Ho 98; advisor: Dr. Kambiz Pourrezaei.
Cynthia Fergus, an ECE student and Class of 02, was a member of the team that received a Drexel Family Scholarship for 1998, for the project "Unlocking the Key to Car Theft."
The Board of Trustees approved the promotion of Dr. Afshin Daryoush to Professor of ECE, effective September 1, 1998. They also approved the tenure of Dr. Stewart Personick, a new faculty member in ECE, our first Colehower Chair Professor of Telecommunications, and the Director of the new Center for Telecommunications and Information Networking.
Daniel E. Mocelo graduated with 1st Honors, and Robert Bahar graduated with 2nd Honors.
Dr. Prawat Nagvajara and Ms. Gina Gualtieri were married on June 19.
