    Achievements

    1995-96

    November, 1996
    • A paper entitled "Instrumentation of Drexel University's Interconnected Power Systems Laboratory", coauthored by Stephen Carullo (graduate student), Chika Nwankpa and Robert Fischl was chosen SECOND PLACE in the Student Paper Contest at the recent 1996 North American Power Symposium (November 10-12, 1996) held at MIT. This is an important achievement considering the competing schools (with the strongest power engineering programs including MIT, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa State, among others) and the educational subject matter of the paper.

    May, 1996
    • Tenure and Promotion Decisions - On May 2, 1996, the Drexel University Board of Trustees approved the tenure and promotion cases of several ECE faculty:
      • Dr. Prawat Nagvajara, tenured and promoted to Associate Professor of ECE
      • Dr. Chika Nwankpa, tenured as Associate Professor of ECE
      • Dr. Moshe Kam, promoted to Professor of ECE
    • Dr. Bruce Eisenstein received the 1996 Distinguished Service Award of the National Electrical Engineering Department Association.

    April, 1996
    • Dr. Banu Onaral has been appointed to NSF's Engineering Advisory Board. She joins a prominent and distinguished group of individuals who play an important role in shaping future NSF policies in engineering research and education.

    • From the April 1 issue of the DREXELink:
      • ECE Faculty Awarded Environmental Contract Drexel's ECE faculty, including Drs. Bruce Eisenstein, Moshe Kam, and P.M. Shankar, have been awarded a contract from the State of New Jersey. ECE faculty will advise the Pinelands Commission on sites for cellular communications towers in the enviromnentally sensitive Pinelands area. Led by Eisenstein, the faculty team will work with cellular providers Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile Systems, Comcast/Cellular One, and Nextel. Team goals include minimizing the number of towers, assessing the towers' environmental impact as well as resulting electromagnetic radiation.

    January, 1996
    • From the January 8 issue of the DREXELink:
      • ECE Graduate Project Gains Recognition An ECE graduate research project that started out as a senior design proposal recently received one of the Delaware Valley Engineers Week Council's 1996 Outstanding Achievement Awards. The project, the ATR 6000-Autonomous Tracked Mobile Robot, a tank-like vehicle, is dsigned to navigate autonomously in harsh environments and chart obstacle-free paths to designated milestones. Dr. Moshe Kam served as project advisor.
      • Dr. Peter Herczfeld, Professor and Director of the Center for Microwave-Lightwave Engineering, co-authored a series of papers presented at the 1995 International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference.
      • Dr. Robert Quinn, Professor, received an alumni achievement award from The Catholic University of America Alumni Association for his accomplishments in the field of engineering.

    November, 1995

    • Dr. Peter A. Lewin, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Biomedical Engineering and Science Institute, has been elected vice chair of the technical standards committee of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
    • Dr Athina Petropulu, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has received a $210,000 grant from the Whitaker Foundation for the development of new methods for resolution improvement of ultrasound images and tissue characterization.

    October, 1995

    • Drexel's College of Engineering was ranked among the top 50 out of nearly 300 engineering schools nationwide in the U.S. News & World Report 1995 America's Best Colleges.
    • Dr. Athina Petropulu, Assistant Professor, has been named a 1995 Presidential Faculty Fellow. She is one of only 30 US engineers and scientists to be honored this year. Presentation of the award will be done by President Clinton in a special White House ceremony. Dr. Petropulu will receive $100,000 per year for five years of research.
