Highlights from the 1997-98 ECE Annual Report
Dr. Moshe Kam received the 1998 Drexel Research Achievement Award.
Dr. Dov Jaron received the National Institutes of Health Directors Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions in planning and directing the NIH Bioengineering Symposium held in February 1998.
IEEE elected Dr. Arye Rosen, Research Professor in ECE, as a Distinguished Microwave Lecturer for 1997-99.
Dr. Moshe Kam was promoted to full membership of the Academy of Forensic Sciences.
Drs. Maja Bystrom and Prawat Nagvajara were awarded the 1998 Teaching-Learning Mini Grants. This program recognizes innovative approaches to enhancing the students learning experience.
Patrick Kelsey, BS-MS student in ECE, won first prize in the 1998 Student Paper Contest organized by the IEEE Philadelphia Section.
A senior design team advised by Dr. Moshe Kam was awarded the 1997-98 AT&T Labs Student Enterprise Award. The team consisting of Flint Weller, ECE; William Hall, ECE; Greg Schuster, ECE; and Kyung Chang, MEM, submitted a project proposal entitled "A Snake Like Robot," which won the AT&T Labs award in a national competition.
Dr. Kevin Scoles received the "Honor Dragon" for "outstanding dedication and significant influence on students and student organizations."
Dr. Kambiz Pourrezaei was elected and served as the Chair of the Faculty Senate in AY 1997-98.
Dr. Dov Jaron, Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering was elected as the 1998 President-Elect of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE).
Dr. Bruce Eisenstein was elected Treasurer of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for 1998, and nominated by the IEEE Board of Directors as a candidate for the 1998 IEEE Presidential Elections.
Dr. Banu Onaral was elected as the 1998 President-Elect of the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) of IEEE.
Dr. Moshe Kam assumed the leadership of the IEEE Philadelphia Section as Chairman, effective January 1, 1998 through December 31, 1998.
Jiang Zhemin, the President of the Peoples Republic of China visited Drexel University on October 30, 1997. President Jiang was greeted by a group of ECE faculty members (Drs. Bilgutay, Eisenstein, Rothwarf, Scoles and Sun) who were instrumental in his sun Mian Heng Jiangs (ECE Ph.D. 91) doctoral studies at Drexel. Dr. Hun H. Sun, who was a mentor to Mian Heng and a friend and former classmate of President Jiang, was greeted warmly by the President during his visit.
During AY 1995-96, the E. Warren Colehower endowed Chair in Telecommunications Engineering was established in ECE. The Chair was endowed through a bequest from Mr. Colehower (BSEE 39) totaling $850,000, which exceeded $1M in December 1997.
