Undergraduate Programs
The undergraduate programs at the ECE Department prepare students for the first phase of their professional careers as engineers, or for further studies – in engineering, medicine, law, or business. See also the ECE Program Educational Objectives.
Due to the great diversity of student objectives and the large number of specialties that are available in the ECE technical fields, a flexible curriculum was devised, which offers many tracks and choices. The goal is to help students tailor their studies to their professional aspirations and future plans, while maintaining a good and balanced exposition to all major topics within the discipline.
We offer two accredited degree programs leading to a Bachelor Of Science degree:
Within each degree program we offer opportunities for specialization and individual course selection. Thus a student who is interested in robotics may select more courses in control, signal processing and computer hardware, while a student who is interested in nanotechnology may select more courses in solid state devices and electrophysics.
Both programs are offered with a cooperative education (co-op) option (5 years, including three six month co-op cycles in indutry) and a no co-op option (4 years, with a single six month co-op cycle in indutry). At present about two thirds of our students select the co-op option.
The department also offers a Part-time Evening Program in Electrical Engineering toward the Bachelor of Science degree and a Dual Degree BS/MS Option. This option allow advanced students to combine undergraduate and gradaute studies and be granted both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in a period of 5 to 5-1/2 years.
Bachelor of Science degree programs
During the first and second years, all engineering students are offered a joint curriculum which combines elements of science, engineering and the liberal arts. The first-year curriculum focuses on introductory courses in mathematics, the sciences, and programming, as well as laboratories and hands-on engineering projects. During the second year, the experience is expanded. Students take introductory engineering classes as well as several ECE classes and laboratories. Liberal studies classes are selected by the student to fit his/her interests and objectives, subject to general guidelines.
As students progress to the upper years, more choice is available and courses become more specialized. Typically students select series of courses that have a common theme (e.g., Signal Processing, Power Engineering) and supplement them by complementary courses from other areas. In their last year students engage in a major design project which demonstrates how years of study made them ready for analayzing and addressing major technical challenges.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Bachelor/Master (BS/MS) Program
The ECE Department offers outstanding students with the opportunity to receive two diplomas (B.S. and M.S.) at the same time. The program requires 5 to 5-1/2 years to complete. Participants, who are chosen from the best undergraduate students, work with a faculty member on a research project and follow a study plan that includes selected graduate classes. This program prepares individuals for careers in research and development; many of its past graduates continued their studies toward a Ph.D.
